a pop-up restaurant with chef and forager matt powell

using seasonal bounty of the land and sea in beautiful pembrokeshire

2 and 3 August 2019

Fish. Forage. Feast.

Join acclaimed chef/forager/fisherman Matt Powell for two exclusive seasonal pop-up restaurant suppers. Live off the fat of the land (and sea) at our hidden farmhouse base in Pembrokeshire.

For the first time this August, Matt will be resident foraging chef at Furzehill Farm, where he will create a pop-up restaurant. In the morning Matt will head out (and you can join him) to seek the bounty of the farm, the wood and the sea to devise a foraged four-course tasting menu. You’re invited to be one of only 15 guests at each of these beautiful evenings. If you can’t make these dates, sign up below to keep up to date with future suppers, foraging outings and cookery courses.

Words from Matt Powell: chef, forager, fisherman, friend

“I was born in Wales, but I spent many years outside my beloved country, working in the best culinary establishments I could, gaining experience at Michelin-starred restaurants. I moved back to Wales to create something unique and something that was culturally important to Wales – for now and for the future.

You can experience what our ancestors may have felt in days past where the seasons and hunting and gathering were so important.
— Matt Powell

"My food only uses produce from Wales. Almost all of it comes from the coastlined county of Pembrokeshire, the county where I live and which I love. With the the Furzehill Foraging Club, I want to express a sense of feeling and of place, capturing the essence of Pembrokeshire with ingredients foraged from the land and sea. You can experience what our ancestors may have felt in days past where the seasons and hunting and gathering were so important.

“The smell of the gorse flowers and the sound of the Skylarks still remind me of the days I spent with them, and hark back to my younger days. Foraging is a way of truly leaving behind the hardships of the fast-paced lives which most of us face in today’s modern, sometimes crazy and hectic world. I want to bring you the best the Welsh coast can offer; an offering of the things to be shared.”

Introducing Val and Alis: hosts, farmers, friends

Your hosts at Furzehill will be Val Rees and her 16-year-old granddaughter Alis. Val has been farming in west Wales her entire life, with years of experience in breeding and training hunters.

Alis will be at least the third successive generation to farm the land; she is about to begin her studies at Hartpury Agricultural College. Alis is currently raising a flock of Jacob’s sheep, renowned for their tasty, low-fat meat and multi-coloured wool. The centrepiece of one of the suppers will be a home-reared lamb.

Stay with us in our Pembrokeshire Beach House

Saundersfoot, Wales

Stay at our beach house

Members of the Furzehill Foraging Club can stay at our beautifully restored modern beach house in Saundersfoot, overlooking the bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The house has stunning views over the sea and a clever upside-down design, with room for up to six guests.

The house has been our family bolt-hole for more than fifty years. Our David’s love for Wales was nurtured by his father on trips to his homeland. Once a practically forgotten corner of the country, Pembrokeshire is fast becoming a cool coastal escape. We’ve given the beach house the Chillderness treatment to bring it bang up to date. The house is available from July 2019 onwards.

Private dining in saundersfoot AND POWYS

Enjoy dinner with a view, prepared exclusively for you by Matt Powell, at our Atlantic beach house in Saundersfoot. If you are fond of sand dunes and salty air, dining by the sea, Matt can create bespoke dinners or you can join him for foraging experiences around Pembrokeshire.

He is also available to create memorable outdoor food experiences for Chillderness guests staying at Red Kite Barn, Red Kite Tree Tents, or at the Conker.
